THis is where the Constellation organization comes in forming "the last group of space explorers", which the player's character will surely join as part of the main quest.Īcross this adventure, we can expect Starfield players to encounter all manner of factions such as the Freestar Collective, a libertarian confederation and one of two main governments in the Settled Systems, and the pirate-like Crimson Fleet. And according to Bethesda (opens in new tab), you don't have to worry about missing out on a faction's quests if you choose another. Humanity has explored a lot of space, so the next frontier/left over mystery is something to do with a ring-like artefact. Starfield's main story is a bit of an enigma. It’s just, you know, it’s a fun killer.” Starfield story We’ve found you’ll be playing the game and ‘I ran out of fuel, OK, I guess I’ll just wander these planets trying to mine for fuel so I can get back to what I was doing. Whereas we used to run out of fuel you’d jump and get stranded, which on paper is a great moment when you get stranded and you’ve got to press this beacon and you don’t know who’s going to come. “But it has a tone of there's some effort involved and we’ve dialed it back as we’ve been making the game. “When you actually play the game, because it’s a game we don’t actually kill you when you fly out in space,” Howard told YouTuber and interviewer Lex Fridman (opens in new tab). And that means there'll be survival elements, but thankfully Todd Howard has said they will won't be an irritating obstacle to exploration. Starfield will lean into hard sci-fi rather than the more fantasy settings of Star Trek and Star Wars. But we suspect a lot of these will be optional places to visit than making Starfield an unwieldy game. Speaking of which you'll be able to pilot it and engage in space combat just expect it to be a more sedate affair than the likes of Star Wars: Squadrons, given these will be big ship that'll be zapping each other than nimble starfighters.Īpparently there'll be more than 1,000 planets to explore, thanks to procedural generation. While we have no doubt that Starfield will deviate from some of the studio’s traditions in certain ways (its more traditional sci-fi setting alone is already a notable deviation from The Elder Scrolls and the studio’s Fallout titles), it’s really starting to feel like those who love or hate Bethesda’s recent RPGs may be able to start drawing some conclusions about how excited they should be about the upcoming 2022 game. And you'll be able to setup based in various location as well as customize your ship. Regardless, this is another example of how Starfield will seemingly be a pretty traditional Bethesda RPG in many respects. Alternatively, Howard could be teasing the possibility that the moment we may assume is the game’s “stepping out” moment will instead be a fakeout designed to hide the real “stepping out” moment that will happen sometime after. Interestingly, Howard also (briefly) mentions that Starfield will include “two ‘step out’ moments.” He stops short of expanding upon what that actually means, but it almost sounds like there is going to be a second “stepping out” moment sometime later in the game. That isn’t to say that moment wasn’t well-scripted in that particular game ( Fallout 4 had a great intro) but rather that the awe-inspiring wonder of seeing this massive world laid out in front of you has been slightly diminished by familiarity over the years from a sheer technological perspective (as well as the fact we’ve come to expect those moments). Fully 3D open-world games have become far more common since the release of Morrowind, and even Oblivion, which means that the feeling of stepping out into one of Bethesda’s worlds was just a little less special in Fallout 4 than it was in some of the studio’s older titles. That could prove to be a pretty tall task. It’s easy enough to understand how SSDs and other technological advances may make that moment a bit “smoother” and “organic” than it was in the past, but Howard almost seems to be suggesting that the team is going to find a way to make that moment just as impressive as it was the first time you experienced it. Longtime Bethesda fans probably won’t be too surprised to learn that Starfield will feature a similar moment, but it is interesting to hear Howard talk about how technology and expectations may alter the direction and nature of that moment in Starfield.
